Space week

It was space week at Raquel's preschool this week. They learned all about outer space, the moon, wrote space adventure stories and build spaceships. Early in the week Raquel brought home some recipes from school for moon food so we thought we would try them out.

First we tried the moon cake. You make it in a round cake pan and the dry ingredients make up the moon dirt, you make craters in the dirt and add milk to one, vanilla to another and make a little erupting volcano in another by combining baking soda and vinegar. After you have had your fun with the craters and volcano you mix everything up and finally add mini marshmallows on top for moon rocks. The girls had fun making it and even more fun eating it. Next we tried making moon balls or edible play dough. Its just a mixture of powdered sugar, honey and peanut butter. I thought it would taste a lot better than it did and it was a bit crumbly but the girls had fun playing with it for a while.

On Wednesday Natalya, Marcus and I got to join Raquel at school to build a spaceship. We started at home with a big box that we painted white (a little left over paint from the pantry shelves) and then I let the girls paint what ever they wanted on the sides. We then took the big box to school where they had lots of extra odds and ends that Raquel could add to her ship. Natalya and I helped Raquel build her spaceship and then they got to go on a spaceship adventure at school. Ms. Leslie (Raquel's teacher) played a space adventure on tape that had them blasting off to space, flying through meteor showers and landing on the moon where they could float and bounce high. The parents had to help out with the weightlessness on the moon and we were the meteor shower using big balloons on rubber bands. It was fun spending time with Raquel at school and being a part of her space adventure.
